Lets Talk Make-up and Hair

(Vender Featured in video Blog: Elena Ochoa ECKO Beauty)

Hi everyone! I hope you are all having a great year and everything is going well! As a former bride I was always so lost at what I needed to do and what realistically everything cost! I feel like Planning a wedding is like the first day of work… that never ends. No matter how much research and training we have we still have no idea what’s going on or how its all going to work… the only thing we know is why we are there and what we are planning! This blog series is for you! I am going to walk you through planning a wedding and hopefully take some stress of your shoulders!! I am not in anyway a wedding planner; I am a Wedding Photographer and a former bride dedicated to taking care of my clients!

When budgeting for wedding hair and make up a few questions could be in the back of your mind.

1. What is the average cost and time I should plan to spend on good quality hair and makeup the day of my wedding if I hire hair and makeup artists to do it?

2. Is it usually expected or is there an obligation to pay for my bridesmaids to have their hair done and at what cost per bridesmaid (& the maid of honor?).

According to the Bridal Association of America, The average bride spends $183 on hair and makeup. Remember, Don’t hold your stylist to that price, all stylist have different prices! The average time you should be planning for hair and make is 2-3 hours, often times longer depending on difficulty of hair and make up style.

Depending on your style and budget of wedding will all depend on who you pay for to have make and hair done on. Most high end weddings the brides family does in fact pay for the wedding party’s hair and make up! Here are some more average cost!

  • On the low end, hair and makeup might cost a total of $70, for a one-time makeup application and an updo or partial updo, at the artist's salon.

  • In the mid-range, it might cost $150 or more for an experienced artist to travel to the wedding.

  • And on the high end, it can cost $350 to $500 or more for a big-name artist to travel to the wedding and stick around for touch-ups during photos.

  • Cost depends heavily on geographic location; large cities can cost double or triple. Makeup artists also charge more if they have to travel to the wedding location and charge an hourly rate of $50 to $125 or more to remain onsite for touch-ups.

  • Do not forget to factor in a tip, which would be 15 to 25 percent of the total cost.

Whether or not you decide to hire a makeup artist on your wedding day, it's always important to test out different beauty looks, techniques, and regimens before you put in a deposit. When you go to a consultation, bring photos of colors and styles you like. Also, bring a photo of your dress. During the consultation, let the stylist experiment, and when you find a look you like, make sure she writes everything down. While you have the make up artist face to face, here are a few questions that will help you decide if they are the right fit for you!

Do they (makeup artists) offers a free consultation and trial run a few months or weeks before the wedding or if they charge.

Ask if they are providing the make up and hair products or if you need to provide some or all of it. (Buying makeup can add between $50 and $300 or more to your cost.) Some makeup artists will ask that you provide some or all of your own makeup.

Ask about group discounts, Some businesses offer package discounts if a certain number of attendants or family members get their hair and makeup done at the same place.

There is a quite a bit of information out there on bridal beauty, and muddling through it for tips is the last thing any bride needs to add to her already busy wedding planning schedule. Below, we set the record straight on five often-heard misconceptions about wedding makeup.

Myth #1: Waterproof Makeup Is A Must Whether you hire a pro or go DIY with your makeup, we definitely recommend using waterproof formulas. It’s the best way to prevent your makeup from slipping off with every hug and kiss. But if your favorite product – a foundation with just the right coverage or an eye shadow in your favorite shade – doesn’t come in a budge-proof formula, don’t worry. Simply lock in your look with long-wear setting spray instead. Myth #2: Keep Your Makeup Natural Of course you don’t want to look like someone else on your wedding day, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to basics or wear the same makeup you put on every other day. In fact, it might look and feel a little underwhelming for such a big event. The big no-no is trying something completely new or overly trendy. Myth #3: Steer Clear Of Sparkle Unless you’re hosting a disco-themed affair, it’s true, you should definitely avoid glitter. However, makeup that boasts subtle sparkle is a great way to add definition to your face. Create your base with liquid foundation. Then, dust with highlighter where the sun would naturally hit your cheekbones for a soft, shimmery bridal glow. You can even dab a touch in the inner corners of your eyes to help look more awake. Myth #4: Bold Lip Color Is Off-Limits Contradictory to what you may have heard, brides can actually rock a red lip on the big day. The only two real rules to follow when going with bold lipstick on your wedding day: use a stain so it’s less likely to rub off, and make sure it’s a blue-based red tone (so your teeth look extra white!).

Myth #5: Always Pack A Touch-Up Kit The last thing you want to do is worry about toting around a big bag full of makeup extras. While it’s not a bad idea to have your lipstick nearby, you won’t really need any other items close at hand. In fact, you should avoid applying any and all powders – blush, eye shadow, bronzers – after you have your wedding dress on. This way you don’t have to worry about marring your white gown with flecks of smoky gray shadow.
